"Atheist Answers" responds to common claims made by Christian (and other religion) apologists. Today's video responds to the claim that the God gives us free will so that we can choose whether to follow him.

Biblical evidence that God determines EVERYTHING, including our very steps:

God Determines Everything, Including Who Will Be Saved:
• Proverbs 16:4 The LORD works out everything to its proper end. [Not just some things..."EVERYTHING."]
• Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
• Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
• Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
• Proverbs 20:24 A person's steps are directed by the LORD.
• John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them. [That means only God decides who will be saved and who won't.]
• Acts 13:48 and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. [Those who come to believe in God were appointed to do so.]
• Romans 8:7-8 Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
• Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope.
• Romans 9:19-21 "You will say to me then, 'Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?' On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, 'Why did you make me like this,' will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?"
• Ephesians 1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.
• Jeremiah 10:23 LORD, I know that people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
• Jeremiah 43:11 He will come and attack Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.
• Isaiah 14:27 For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him?
• Isaiah 37:26 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass.
• Amos 3:6 Does disaster come to a city, unless the Lord has done it? [People don't cause disaster unless God makes them do it.]
• Job 42:1-2 Then Job answered the LORD and said, "I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted."
• Psalm 37:23 A man's steps are established by the LORD, and the LORD delights in his way. [Only an evil God would delight in establishing a man's steps to take the wrong path.]
• Psalm 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Underlings No, you cannot compare mankind to animals. We can think in higher ways than they can. The subject we are focusing on here is the ability to chose to do what the Creator says is good or to reject that and do what we think is better. Computers are programmed, they do not make individual choices, they cannot reject their programming. Ephesians 1, is talking about how The Creator planned to accomplish his will to save us through the Messiah before the foundation of the world. He accomplishes everything he sets out to do, according to his own will. Meaning what he wants to do he does. He is able to save all that have their hope in Messiah. Yes, there is room for free will, you have to have faith in the Messiah. It should be obvious that an atheist have chosen to not have faith in the Messiah. It doesn't matter what calvinist believe what matters is what scripture says. According to scripture he did give beings once the ability to make free will choices but were not able to destroy each other, they are called the Malakim/Messengers. That didn't result in the ideal world you seem to think it would. In fact it resulted in rebellious beings who had to be cast out and quarantined. Each human's rebellion is contained to one life time. Man was made for something greater. Angels know without a doubt there is a Creator, but man must choose to believe even when we make the world dark and "Godless." He is looking for people after his own heart, people who search for him. "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." It like children who when the teacher leaves the room, have the choice to follow the school's rules or start doing their own thing. Do some research in archeology, and see what other societies were like before Israel and before the Messiah. Nations, empires, tribes, did very cruel things to their children. They sacrificed and even burned them in the fire to their false Gods. Biology, That would be the design of the creator. He is a good Creator and he does offer a way for us to be kind loving people and show love for each other, it's called having his Holy Spirit dwelling within us. His character/power, that creates in us a clean heart, and Renews a right spirit within us. Having relationships with right minded - loving people helps us to take on those qualities. It's the same principle here only Yahweh is the source of righteousness and love so ultimately it's the greatest relationship we can have to become right minded - loving people. Blaming the Creator for "building in destructive drives" is like blaming him for giving us the drive to eat because it can lead to obesity. Along with bodily drives come the responsibility to use them according to the will of the designer. Every good thing can be twisted till it is a bad thing. Responsibility may be a bad word to the immature but it is a defining characteristic of people who guard their actions according to higher principles and not carnal desires. "If you do well, is there not acceptance? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should master it.” To say The Creator has "no problem" when we do evil to each other is illogical and a denial of what scripture says. To reject his rule and then blame him for allowing you to do it, is very hypocritical. It's like pushing a lifeguard away as you are drowning and blaming the lifeguard as you continue to ingest the water. "The Creator himself, can't possess free will" We first need to define what we mean by “free will.” Free will: “the capacity of a conscious mind to make decisions and choices without any external constraints or coercion.” the creator has a mind and is conscious; He has the capacity to make decisions and choose (He has volition); He does not answer to any authority, is not limited by any external constraints, and cannot be coerced. Therefore, based on this definition, we can say, yes, he certainly possesses free will. Scriptures describes the Creator as dwelling in the 3rd heaven, the highest Heaven, his full presence is not everywhere in creation but his sustaining power is. He uses Messengers, as a way of knowing what is going on in the earth. This is most likely for our own protection. It would be impossible for us, as we are, to be in his full presence. Scripture says the Creator changes his mind in the actions he will take if people obey or if they sin. "Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure.” (Isaiah 46:10) Peace

Food for existential thought: In part true free will is inhibited by the limitations of our own minds and bodies.

Jim Woodford died. Look what he saw in Heaven by Sid Roth it`s Supernatural ! Atheists and God haters must watch this fascinating and awesome video ! I don`t think we have complete free will to do anything we want, but we have a choice to either accept or reject God ! While we are alive we can get God`s mercy but after we die and on Judgment day every body will be begging for His mercy but it will be too late !

You can't have partial free will. Freedom is either absolute or it is not freedom.

Underlings The term "Free Will" may not appear in the Bible but if you research where this discussion came from and what it was originally based on you will find that long before the Bible was written this was discussed at length by the Greeks among others. It has been a topic of discussion ever since with nobody making much progress. I think the reference to choices in the Bible cover the idea that we are free to choose. I also believe that even if God appears to know how things will pan out Jesus alluded to the idea that nobody knows what God has planned...not even Jesus in his worldly form could elaborate on anything about how this world would end. There are actually many references in the Bible to making choices as you mentioned. John 7:17 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Joshua 24:15 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” The second one was from Joshua who lead the Jews into the promised land and I may have posted this in reply to another one of your videos on the same topic. I don't think it can be much plainer than that where God inspires a man to tell the people they can choose God or the other gods...

Yes, this 'free will' isn't clearly defined by Christianity. As I see it free will shouldn't be in any way coercive or threatening. But the Christian free will is a little like a Mafia boss asking you if you'd like your property protected.. saying no isn't an option unless you want your property smashed up. Saying no to Jesus is not an option.. eternal hell awaits. Thanks but no thanks :-)

when did god give anybody freewill? if there's something like freewill, then it's the devil who gave it to mankind according to the bible... genesis 3:5-20... god only invoked curses upon man for doing something that he the lord had already planned, because according to the bible he's all knowing...
'Euphoriart' 2 years ago
My thought is how is it free will if we know he's going to send us to Hell if we don't do just as he says? It's like if someone held you at gunpoint demanding your money: You have the "choice" to give it and live, or keep it and die. But really is that much of a choice...?

Here's something else I realized about the idea of "everything that happens happens because God wills it": If God has planned out everything and everything that we do is because he wills it, then that logically means that not only do not have free will, but we are also _not responsible for our actions and therefore cannot be held accountable for them_. How can we be if our whole lives and everything we do in it has been predetermined and controlled by God? We have no say in the matter, every single thing we do is down to him. If I were to rob a bank, it's not my fault because God is controlling my actions, he predetermined me to rob this bank and I have no choice but to comply because he has absolute power over me. Also, if this is true, the fact that (according to the Bible) God created Hell and sends people there to be "punished" for their sins essentially means he's punishing people for doing things _he himself is making them do_. It's the cosmological equivalent of grabbing a someone's hand and hitting them with it while saying "Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!"

Apologists often say that you can't prove God doesn't exist but because of this and other inconsistencies in the _biblical_ description of God it IS possible to prove that either: - the Christian god doesn't exist or - the Buy Bull is wrong about God's nature. One of those statements MUST be true.

Free will is like democracy, you can only vote for the shit that`s on offer. If we had free will we/they could choose between something better than Trump or Clinton. But soon one of these odious "free will choices" will be the chosen one. It is bollocks.

Atheism is dead R.I.P. God is the real creator, evolver, maintainer and ruler of the universe as discovered and verified with extraordinary peer-reviewed evidence, beyond a reasonable doubt, by the secular natural sciences to be the laws of nature & forces of physics not the silly father, son and holy ghost. Everything has a 100% all natural explanation including the true God.

More on free-will from the perspective of game design . If one creates a game it's likely that one is familiar with every aspect of every move possible . Take monopoly: in designing it the creators set guidelines and could calculate innumerable different moves; but I don't think it's possible for the creators of monopoly to know every detail of every moved played by different people since the games inception . And what if there was a player that came up with a unique and novel move never anticipated by the designers? Now, to me, theologically, this is where The Watchers would come into play . So, God designs the game but the Watchers keep track of all the moves of the players! This, to me, seems at least to be a coherent religious philosophy :)

I'm stupid enough to have mused on this topic throughout my life. Completely speculative: the word at the beginning of Genesis means re-created. So what if this universe is the effect of previous universal causes? Could god know who is destined to hell because 'he' has past proof of what some will do and perhaps enough is enough after so many go arounds? More pragmatically, any free-will we do have is exceedingly limited . I can't quaff a million bucks into my apartment just by wishing it; I can't defy gravity beyond what is possible, etc . Theologically, it should be obvious that god sent satan into the garden to test Adam and Eve; as he tested Jesus, as he tested Job; as he apparently tests all of us . How these happenings turned into Christian and Islamic dogma is fascinating, indeed . In reality, there are very few who take the Bible literally on the earth these days; unfortunately though, those who do run the most powerful empire in the history of man! I do shake my head at the politics in America in the last 100 years . I'm convinced it's a fact that the evolving church in America around 1900 was consciously and wilfully corrupted by zionists and capitalists. The mercury poisoning probably hasn't helped those parishes either:( This more than anything explains American religiosity in the last 100 years . And on post-secularism: it's a fact there are and have always been controlling elites on this planet . As science and the enlightenment loosened the restraints of the shackles of religion the elite came up with a new method of control: global finance! But, as the internet has brought to light the sheer scale of this swindle; well then , old tactics always remain useful .

Some Christian Fundamentalists would say God will eventually pay that person back with the eternal flames of hell for violating that person's free will. Strange though that the person who committed the crime against a person's free will could be saved if they repented and asked Jesus into their beart but if the person whos free will was violated does not will be cast into a lake of fire to be tormented for all eternity. A good video to watch is a vid by darkmatter2525 titled, "How God Favors Evil."

Religions are dead anyone still believing in the good god of the bible is simply a person who chose to be a victim of demons for all eternity simple as that...... what re Jehovah followers called? the sheep? there sheep to the slaughter of demons, they imposed all religions to cover all aspects of human variety from the loving forgiving to the well not gonna say crazy liker fanatics and in between they got them all covered..........just pick one all tis because the Truth was destroyed or hidden for many milenia not until the dead sea scrolls and Nag Hamadi and Enoch and the like came to the light we were dormant.. anyone who has not read anything beyond the mains stream religions is of course TOTALy not 99% but TOTALY deceived!!!!!! Those writings explain very clearly that the gods of the religions of main stream are nothing short of DEMONIC entities hence this you are showing what else could it be? Imagine say9ing I will prove that the god (demons) of the bible are Evil hehehe sort of redundant............. and there are some people who even if you SHOW THEM the truth they still wont beleive oyu but the time is here and soon your videos will make a hell of a lot of sense when the news and the pope and all start talking about yeah Friendly Aliens hahahaha none other than the same freak show demons with different names they knew religion eventually will fail them!!!!!!!!!! you are proof of that so they came with a new PLAN OH now we are Alien Extra terrestrial or Dimensional hahahaha but is too late for them our copiousness broke the wall and now well there is no way back for them they Will be slaughter by guess who? Us humans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They ARe SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Afradi and were of us KNOWING get it Gnostics and now it has happened the demons worst nightmare just came to be BEsides they are a dying Race of Demons the food they need is no longer good for them it has become poison which is allthose wars and killings they put mankind through using guess what RELIGION!!!!!!!!

If this god is all-knowing, which includes knowing the future, _and_ the all-powerful creator of everything, then all the universe is is a physical manifestation of thoughts God has already had, therefore freewill cannot possibly exist.
'pilgrimpater' 2 years ago
So the only Free Will in Ephesians 1:11 is reserved for God alone. We are not god therefore we cannot have free will. The other amusing thing is that Christianity only exists because of the "Free Will" of the Romans and Priests. They could easily have released him and JC would have probably gone on to die of old age and natural causes. Where would this have left Yaweh?

God's omniscience cancels out our responsibility for our free will choices. Not to mention that he invented the rules by which we will be judged...and knew the outcome from before the start. All this God wants is our eternal praise and worship. He sounds like Donald Trump...wait a minute. LOL.

Question out of curiosity and also to answer when debating Christians: if you're an atheist, how can you still not believe in free will if god doesn't exist?
'MA L' 2 years ago
I've often heard apologists say that God gave us free will because he didn't want us to be mindless robots. But what good is that, really? I mean, for all I know, I could be no more than a brain in a vat, and all my experiences could be generated and fed to me by a machine, but that doesn't bother me whatsoever, because my experience is my experience. I have no way of knowing whether or not I am a brain in a vat, so it doesn't change anything for me. So, what difference would it make if we were mindless robots without free will? And ultimately, isn't that what we'll be in Heaven/Hell anyway?
